With three generations of one family, we share moments that are meant to be savored in this special book that beautifully illustrates the words of John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s world-renowned song “In My Life.”

There are places I’ll remember, in my life, though some have changed...

One gift with a bright bow starts a young girl on a path…one her mother follows with her as she explores, grows, and rides off on her own, only to return again with her own daughter in tow. This hauntingly beautiful book shares the small moments of that journey that are meant to be remembered and savored in the lyrics of this classic song.

Based on the Lennon and McCartney Beatles' tune, this picture book showcases the lyrics against a background of a family in a coastal setting. We see a little girl getting a bike as a present, and her mother helping her to learn to ride it with a lighthouse in the background. The girl hangs out with friends and explores the shoreline as she gets older. She goes off to college, has a child of her own, and eventually returns to her childhood home to greet her mother, where there is a bike waiting for her daughter.
Good Points
I hadn't noticed it the first time I read the book, but I absolutely enjoyed how the thread of bike riding is woven throughout the story! From the small bike with training wheels to the ubiquitous ten speed of college campuses to a baby seat on a cruiser, the girl has a bike throughout her life, which is such a great, subtle message!

We have not yet seen the end of Beatles' fandom; when my daughter was born in 1998, there was a line of John Lennon clothing with his illustrations, and this book was first published in 2009. Perhaps Baby Boomers are having great grandchildren, and Gen Xers like myself are starting to become grandparents?

This is not the first picture book to highlight song lyrics, and not even the first for a Beatles' song: Candlewick put out a version of Yellow Submarine in 2018, and Jullien illustrated Lennon's Imagine in 2017. There's also Hughes' illustrations for Parton's Coat of Many Colors, and to get a little more modern, the photoillustrated version of Williams' Happy. If you tear up just thinking about this Beatles song, this is definitely a book to investigate!
