In this delightful introduction to simple money concepts, an enthusiastic young bunny discovers how good it feels to use his allowance to help others.

Chummy longs to be a superhero. He wants to save the world--or at least Bunnyland--from dragons, so spending his carrots on a superhero costume seems like a great plan! When his grandma reminds him that there aren't any dragons in Bunnyland, but that there are creatures that could use help, Chummy starts reconsidering the best way to spend his wad. This is the fourth book in the internationally acclaimed Moneybunny Books series that also includes Earn It!, Spend It!, and Save It!

GIVE IT! introduces the simple concept of charity as well as being thoughtful about money purchases. Chummy and his Gran adore each other, and for his birthday, she gives him 10 carrots (carrots are money in Bunnyland). Gran suggests that he use some of the money for himself and some for helping others. Chummy has his eye on a new superhero costume that costs 10 carrots, but then he wouldn't have any left over to help.

When he and his Gran begin thinking about how he can use his money to help, they realize that the bumblebees need help as there aren't enough flowers for them to eat. Before lunchtime, Chummy realizes he can relate to the bumblebees and then has another plan to buy some flowers to save the bees.

What I loved: This is a cute and simple story about being careful and thoughtful about purchases, as well as the joy that can come from helping others. It is great to watch his decision process and teaches children simple money concepts when Chummy is examining how much things cost and how to spend his birthday money. The relationship between Chummy and his Gran is very sweet, and I love seeing characters who really want to help others. The bumblebees are also very topical and could spark more discussions about why people are discussing the need to save the bees outside of Bunnyland.

The illustrations are simple but cute and the layouts of the plans are helpful for young children to visualize. Most of the text happens in conversation, so it is helpful to read Chummy and his Gran in different voices for reading comprehension.

What left me wanting more: As a very small point, the text is a little hard to read, but it is nice and large (just an unusual font that looks like handwriting and some cursive-style letters). For children who will have the book read to them, it can also be a little hard to attribute the text to which character is speaking, so doing different voices helps them to follow along (those who can read will be able to see the location of the text as a visual guide).

Final verdict: A great way to introduce money concepts and charity spending, GIVE IT! is a sweet book about a bunny who wants to help others- and ultimately helps some happy bumblebees. Recommend for preschoolers and young elementary school aged readers.
