THE COOL BEAN is a picture book with the ultimate message that kindness is cool. The book is told in the first-person by a bean that is seemingly uncool. He admires the cool beans from afar, even though they used to be friends, and laments his inability to be cool. Then, one day, he encounters some troubles, like dropping his lunch food on his shoes. Even though it could have been a terrible day, the cool beans help him out with a nod, smile, or wink. He realizes that being kind is all you need to be cool, and it can make a huge difference for someone else.

What I loved: The message here is really fantastic, encouraging children to be kind to others. The story conveys this message beautifully, and the writing is very conversational, making the reader empathize with the main character easily. The illustrations are simple, but accompany the story perfectly. This book would be great for preschoolers through elementary school-aged children.

The font is large and clear, making this easy to read aloud. There are also plenty of bean-related puns to add some humor for parents and children alike.

Final verdict: Overall, THE COOL BEAN is a fun book that conveys the message that "kind is cool" in a highly approachable and entertaining way. Perfect for preschool or elementary school crowds, this picture book is a great read.
