A NEW SCHOOL FOR CHARLIE is a fantastic picture book that captures the difficulty of attending a new school. Charlie the dog loves school, and he is so excited to attend his new one. However, when he gets to Catford Primary, everything is different, and Charlie has trouble making friends. He tackles the problem by going to the library to find some books to help. Soon, he has a new friend in Fiona the cat, and he finds his own place among his classmates (he's the only one not afraid of the water in swimming class). Charlie never forgets what it felt like to be lonely, so he always makes new friends.

What I loved: This is such an upbeat and lovely read about the new student experience. I love that Charlie recognizes the problem and solves it by going to the library- and he continues with kindness, learning from his own experience what it was like to be new. Change can be tough for children, but this book tackles the topic with kindness, positivity, and an adorable protagonist. There are also some gems in it that parents can chuckle about, such as the cat classroom working on "String Theory" (of course, they mean yarn) and Fiona reading "A Tale of Two Kitties." The word-to-picture ratio is great, and the whole story reads very well.

Final verdict: Whether you have a child who might be attending a new school or a child who might know new students, this is a positive read about friendship, kindness, and dealing with change. Highly recommend for young readers.
