On the First Day of Summer Vacation
From catching fireflies to going to the zoo to learning how to swim, there are so many summer activities to look forward to. This bright, engaging adaptation of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” celebrates and rewards a productive school year with all the adventures that the summer months have to offer.
Tish Rabe, a seasoned children’s book author of over 160 books, puts a novel spin on a first-day-of classic with On the First Day of Summer Vacation.
Kids in classrooms and at home will enjoy following along as they focus on all the fun things to do during summertime!
What I loved: The children depicted are multicultural and this was really great! There are also many fun activities that can give some great ideas of things to do in the summer months. The illustrations are cartoonish and full of bright colors which are fun for children to look at, and books around songs can always be delightful to sing and hear sung.
What left me wanting more: If you do not sing the book, the text is very repetitive (as is the nature of the song). If you do sing it, the tune is a little off, as some of the phrases are awkward (for instance, building castles out of sand, which does not quite fit with the tune). However, it is still a cute book overall and is a fun read- and the repetitive nature will appeal to toddlers.
Final verdict: Overall a cute and diverse book, ON THE FIRST DAY OF SUMMER VACATION is a celebration of all the things that make summer break fantastic! With brightly colored illustrations and a text that could be sung, children will enjoy this cute book.
