This is one of my favorite young adult books. The first time I read it I was in grade school and it was only the "older kids" in 7th and 8th grade who had dances, so the very thought of going to a dance was scary. Then this book came along and suddenly a new can of worms was opened-I was supposed to have a date to the dance?! Luckily, none of us ever went for the whole "date for the dance" thing, but this book prepared me for what I might have had to endure.
Janet is a very realistic and likable character. She has real flaws and it feels like you're reading about your next door neighbor. A great book that I would highly recommend-especially before you attend your first dance!

Janet is the only girl in seventh grade who doesn't have a date for the dance. So, being as clever as possible, Janet comes up with a plan that the whole seventh grade believes. She tells everyone that she has a "secret" date, and she describes him in detail. Now she is off to find a brown-eyed boy who's nice, cute, smart and real.
