Tornado Hits!: A Branches Book (Hilde Cracks the Case #5)
This series is part of Scholastic's early chapter book line, Branches, aimed at newly independent readers. With easy-to-read text, high-interest content, fast-paced plots, and illustrations on every page, these books will boost reading confidence and stamina. Branches books help readers grow!
Real-life crime reporter Hilde Lysiak is starring in her very own early chapter book series -- inspired by real news stories she has written! In this fifth book, a tornado hits Selinsgrove! Hilde and her sister/photographer Izzy set out to uncover its path and report on the damage. No one is hurt, but the sisters find a strange clue: There are fish flopping all over Orange Street! Where did the fish come from? Hilde is about to discover something WILD!
Joanne Lew-Vriethoff's personality-filled illustrations appear on every page, bringing Hilde's adventures to life for young readers!
The first thing they do is get all of the fish to safety! Then, they search for the reason live fish were in the middle of the road. It's a strange occurrence indeed and they must follow the clues to solve it. Hilde and her sister interview people in the path of the tornado and those who own a restaurant and might've lost a delivery of fish. But the answer lies in science.
I love how the illustrations fill each page and that some look like notebook paper with case notes. Hilde is an inspiration to those children who want to be journalists as well. Hilde uses her mind to make the right choices in each situation and love how she shows the path to problem-solve.
Final Verdict: TORNADO HITS is perfect for fans of mysteries, weather, and journalism. Hilde just may be the new Nancy Drew!
