The smallest of three brothers, Keenan Mowat had a priceless talent: he loved the sea and the sea loved him right back.

One in a series of tales that explore the deeper, darker side of our connection with the natural world. Be ready to feel a little bit of magic, and perhaps a few shivers down the spine.

I have never heard of this author or these books and I am so amazed that I haven’t. Not only is it a little bit dark, a little bit strange, but the illustrations that come with it are absolutely beautiful. Every picture is done in a blue hue and done in such a beautiful style that you can’t help but stare and stare at each and every page. They help bring this story about a young man and his love of the sea to life.

These illustrations and the strangely fascinating story make me want to pick up the other three books in the shadow and light series. They are nothing I’ve ever read before but I absolutely know that I want more. They’re not light stories but they are perfect for those kids with the love of the strange and unusual. Nicola has such a love for the sea and it’s creatures and it’s evident in this story. The sea is strange and unpredictable but for Keenan, he has always loved and respected the sea and because of that, the sea loves him back. I loved that part of the story and I thought it was a beautiful sentiment. This is a children’s book but I think anyone can and should read it. It’s an amazing story.
