Celebrate the 75th anniversary of the perennial favorite Caps for Sale with this never-before-published sequel to the beloved classic! In this first posthumous book from Esphyr Slobodkina, those mischievous monkeys are at it again, bringing laughs to a new generation of readers. The sequel, More Caps for Sale, picks up right where Caps for Sale left off, as the peddler comes face-to-face with those monkeys and their funny business yet again. More Caps for Sale is based on story ideas discussed by Slobodkina and Ann Marie Mulhearn Sayer throughout their years as friends and business associates prior to Esphyr's death in 2002. With simple text and illustrations, filled with warmth and humor, this sequel is perfect for early readers and follows a great folktale tradition.

The peddler from Caps for Sale is back, and so are the monkeys. After returning home, the peddler is surprised to see the monkeys hanging out in a tree near his house, eating bananas! He hadn't felt like eating, but finishes up his soup, following the monkey's example. Likewise, when he has trouble sleeping, he sees the monkeys asleep in a tree, and is lulled into slumber by them. He has a very successful day selling caps, but only because the monkeys are up to their old highjinks in his wake-- and he, of course, remains oblivious.
Good Points
Based on a story discussed by Slobodkina and her long time assistant, Sayer, this tale is illustrated exclusively with Slobodkina's original art, taken from several of her books. The charming aqua, brown and red color scheme is preserved in most of the panels, and the scenes at home and in town seem new and familiar at the same time.

The plot seems more purposeful, with the peddler being helped by the monkeys, but what young readers will find most amusing is his cluelessness at being followed by a huge herd of monkeys! I have to admit that as a long time fan of the first book, I found the afterword about the collaboration that lead to this volume more intriguing than the story itself.

Fans of Caps for Sale will not want to miss the new addition to the Slobodkina cannon!
