The Mad Apprentice (The Forbidden Library #2)
In the second installment of The Forbidden Library series the adventure continues shortly after The Forbidden Library ends. Alice learns that there is a whole faction of ancient Readers who guard their secrets. They are a jealous group who will stop at nothing to protect their own interests. No one’s intentions are as pure as they seem to be.
All this comes to a head with the death of an older Reader. The only suspect is his young apprentice. Geryon sends Alice to capture the boy and bring him to justice. This ends up being a very difficult task. Can anyone be trusted? Can Alice believe everything she’s been told? Alice must survive dangers at every corner without truly knowing who she can trust.
What I like best? Django Wexler is a master world builder. The entire series is filled with strange new worlds with even stranger creatures. The details Wexler weaves into the story allow the reader to fall into the story and feel like they are right there with Alice. He builds wonder and awe in ever page. He is definitely one of my top authors!
Alice is a strong young heroine who does not back down in the face of adversity. She knows what she wants and will do anything to get it. But as a born leader, she also never sacrifices her beliefs to get ahead. Friendships are important to her, as are the creatures that are bound to her. She is true of heart but strong enough to face whatever comes her way. It is great to see a female lead that is both strong and caring, yet also struggles with tough decisions.
The Mad Apprentice is a fun and action-filled adventure that is beautifully illustrated. The main target audience for this series may be the middle grade audience, but readers of all ages will be able to appreciate the underlying messages and exciting fast paced action. No matter what the age, readers will love these books. Can’t wait for the next one!
