The four Conroy sisters-- Ruth (14), Naiomi (12), Rachel (8), and Phoebe (6), are ready for another boring summer, until they receive hints that their parents have inherited a fortune. When the fortune turns out to be less than spectacular, the girls are horrified that their parents are spending it on re-modeling the house and-- even worse-- sending them to spend the summer with their "Big Grandma," a tough old woman who's hardly the grandmotherly type.
Set in Cumbria (England), this is the zany story of the sisters surviving their vacation in a place without books, learning to love nature (or at least strawberries and bucket fishing) and their grandmother (though they have a disastrous way of repaying this love). From scatter-brained Ruth to more practical-minded Naiomi to goofy Rachel to Phoebe, the zaniest of them all, this is a stoey filled with unique characters. Funny without being slapstick, this is a must-read by any bookworm who would be similiarly horrified by a summer without reading material.
