One Powerful Woman

In 2019, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez became the youngest woman in history to serve in the Congress and this book highlights her story. Even at a young age, Alexandria knew she was meant for more and was never afraid to break stereotypes, as long as she was making the world a better place. As she grew, she became more and more aware of the inequality that takes place throughout the stages of life. It was something she couldn’t standby and watch so she decided to take matters into her own hands. No matter how many people turned her away, she stood tall and knocked down each oppressive wall. Even though she had her sights set high, she never looked too far from her family and was always there when they needed her. An important trait to have.

The illustrations are vibrant and bring life to the journey for younger readers. In the back of the book there are some lessons and a glossary for future world-changers. I love this added bonus because it teaches children that they can do big things too. Alexandria’s traits are admirable and she stuck to her roots and beliefs that family will always come first. She’s an inspiration to children everywhere and she doesn’t become a congresswoman for her own gain. She does it for her family and for those without a voice.

Final Verdict: I would recommend this for elementary classrooms everywhere because the story of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a powerful one that needs to be shared. Children can learn to be an activist like her and change the world with one step at a time.
