SOUNDS OF THE WILD is a fantastic non-fiction children's book that takes the reader on a journey through several islands' wildlife. On each page spread, the book includes a poem that leads to an animal sound plus facts about other animals who also share the island. The facts are quite broad and include new information that I found fascinating as an adult. The end of the book includes a map of the world to show where these islands are located and discuss the animals from the book which are under threat of extinction.
What I loved: This book has so much great information in the form of fun facts about many different animals who live on islands. The book takes the reader on a journey through 9 islands along with a featured animal and their sounds. The sounds are really great and add to the fun experience of learning about new wildlife. The illustrations are full of color and feature the animals along with their facts that bring the experience to life.
The book includes an on-off switch on the back for the sounds that is really helpful, and the sounds are a medium volume such that they are heard when the book is laid flat without being muffled but not too loud when held up either. This is a really fun feature of the book that brings the selected animals to life. The ending inclusion of the map and information about the featured animals under threat of extinction was fantastic to put it all in context for young children.
Final verdict: With fascinating animal facts, great illustrations, and sounds, SOUNDS OF THE WILD is an interesting and fun exploration of island wildlife. Highly recommend for elementary school aged animal lovers.
