Two orphaned boys escape to Venice to avoid separation at the hands of evil relatives. While there, they join a rag-tag group of street urchins living in an abandoned theatre under the leadership of the mysterious Thief Lord. When a detective hired by the boys' relatives discovers the kids, they enter into a struggle to retain their happy lives-- and deal with the true identity of the Thief Lord. Their safety may depend on a magical old merry-go-round, but first they have to find it . . .
Part fairy tale, part friendship story, this book was very engaging and fun to read. The kids are easy to root for, and are "real" enough to capture the attention of readers who normally don't like fantasies.
