‘Grim, Grunt and Grizzle-Tail’ by Fran Parnell, illustrated by Sophie Fatus, is great for younger elementary readers and anyone who enjoys a good story.

When the king gets upset with his daughters, he decides to turn them into oranges. Yes, oranges. While far-fetched, it showcases how the king sees fit to basically be rid of his daughters, at least for the time being, in order to not have to deal with their mischievous ways any longer. However, he doesn’t consider the fact that there are monsters afoot who are eager to steal the oranges and basically eat his daughters. While this may sound scary, the book doesn’t bring about much cause to worry.

Two of the monsters, Grim and Grunt, are eager to capture the girls while they are in the form of oranges, but instead of doing their own dirty work, they bully their monster brother, Grizzle-Tail, into stealing the girls/oranges and bringing them back. Someone must come to their rescue, but no one but Pedro, a boy who works in the king's palace, seems brave enough to test his courage and rescue them. When all seems fruitless, and Pedro finds himself stuck in his journey to rescue the princesses, a surprising friend comes to his rescue, and hope returns.

The story asks the question “What would you do if a monster kidnapped you?” and the book's answer might just surprise you, but it creates an encouraging tone for all readers as Pedro and the princesses work to find their way home.
