What I loved: This is a gorgeous book between the lyrical prose and the lush illustrations. The love between grandparent and grandchild shines through the pages. While the main theme is certainly this love and connection, there are some important themes about culture and the immigrant experience that bring awareness. I loved the way the young girl and her Popo connect, and the way they share their love. The illustrations are gorgeous as well, with plenty of detail and Taiwanese foods and places. The writing flows off the tongue so beautifully that it is delightful to read aloud.
The author and illustrator notes at the back are also a great addition that help bring additional context to the story and images. Their experiences add to the richness of the text.
Final verdict: I DREAM OF POPO is a beautiful book of love and family. Highly recommend for picture book readers of all ages who will enjoy the lush illustrations, family connections, and beautiful writing.
