A GIFT FOR AMMA is a delightful and colorful journey through the marketplace in India. A young girl ventures out of her house to find a gift for her mother, but she knows she wants it to be something special. As she travels through the marketplace, she notices differently colored things that she considers for her Amma along the way. Each page is filled to the brim with details and color, there is so much to look at that it is a delight to explore.
What I loved: The illustrations in this book are absolutely gorgeous with so many details and bright colors. I loved the theme of buying a special present for her mother, and the care that she takes in selecting one. Along the way, we get to explore so many things that are present in the marketplace in India, classified by their color. The end of the book includes some additional information about the items.
The writing has a beautiful rhythm to it, and it also captures the sounds and experiences of the marketplace throughout. The illustrations give so much to explore and are absolutely beautifully drawn. This is a great book for so many ages whether enjoyed at the surface or explored further with deeper looks into the culture and marketplace features of India. This would be great as part of a lesson in the classroom setting.
Final verdict: A GIFT FOR AMMA is a gorgeously illustrated picture book exploring the marketplace in India. With lovely writing and detailed illustrations, this book is a great journey of color for readers of many ages.
