THE MORE WE GET TOGETHER takes the song and adds verses about how children can change the world. The book can be sung, and there is a CD (or QR code for online downloading) of the song (and video) in the back of the book to help. The CD can be played in a computer for both audio and visual or in a CD player for audio. The verses cover a wide spread of topics like biking to recycling to activism to volunteering in the community, all while matching the song and rhyming. Illustrations accompany each page with full-page color and many diverse people depicted.
The back of the book expands on these ideas to talk about things children can do to make the world a better place. These activities can be expounded in classroom settings or easily implemented at home, making this a book that can inspire.
What I loved: Songs are really fun and have high appeal to young readers. This one works really well with the music and is really cleverly written. The topic is quite inspirational, showing young children how they can make a difference, even in small ways, which can have big effects. The material at the end is really helpful in creating a bigger discussion around this with children at home or in school. The CD/online music and video add to the fun (and are helpful for parents/caregivers who may not easily be able to sing it all themselves).
The illustrations are really delightful, with plenty of diversity among the children and adults (skin colors, characters wearing hijabs, visible disabilities, and more) and bright colors that will appeal to young readers. There's a lot of detail that make this a fun book to explore.
Final verdict: A delightful new take on a classic song, THE MORE WE GET TOGETHER is a book that can inspire young children to make a difference in the world around them.
