Although the safety patrol thinks they are keeping the human town safe, the lines of the battle are not so clear. As Hilda and her mother work from two different sides to find each other again and help Hilda become human again, we learn more about the conflicts and the trolls. With humor, adventure, and fantastic illustrations, this is an engaging graphic novel that tells a complete story with great appeal for the elementary-aged crowd (and above).
What I loved: The characters really come to life in this book, especially Hilda, the troll mother who took her, and Hilda's mother. Seeing both sides of the battle and understanding troll life, this book also demonstrates for children about not judging too quickly and taking time to appreciate the other side. I will say that troll life (aside from clashes with humans and other troll groups) looks pretty great with their fun hoards and free time! This all adds to the fun of the story.
I also loved the alternating perspectives between Hilda and her mother that give a more well-rounded story and add some messages about parental love. This is just all-around a great story, and it's easy to see why they made Hilda into a show on Netflix!
The illustrations are also really fantastic with great color selections, easy to follow panels and text, and expressive faces/characters. Children can easily follow and enjoy this story through the panels. This would be great for reluctant readers or those who are in between picture and chapter books, as you get the best of both worlds here.
Final verdict: Overall, this is an adventurous and delightful story that follows Hilda as she wakes up a troll and seeks to become human again. With lots of action, a tenacious heroine, and fantastic illustrations, children are sure to enjoy following the latest graphic novel installment of HILDA AND THE MOUNTAIN KING. Highly recommend for reluctant readers and/or anyone who wants to enjoy a thrilling and engaging fantasy adventure.
