I love a good battle with machines imbued with the souls of rats and lots of crunching of steel machinery, so this was a nice surprise after the homey beginning. Blake was more evil than I expected, and this took a dark, dark turn. Granted, I adore the kind of nasty, vindictive revenge Estelle exacts on Blake, but it was a little unexpected.
Readers who like Steampunk titles like Ross' The Fog Diver, Savage's Cove series and Gratz's League of Seven books. will be sucked in by this alternate world peopled by automatons. It's a nice change of pace from mythologically based fantasy.
