The Boy on the Porch is a beautiful story about family and love. It feels like a fable in the truest form. Although geared for young readers, this feels more like a family read or read aloud. The story is told through the adults’ point of view and is a story about their journey of loss and unconditional love. It is a story of the transformation of John and Marta- their lives before Jacob and after Jacob arrives on their front porch.

Sharon Creech did a marvelous job getting the read to feel both the pain of loss and the warm fuzzy feelings. It is a book about people finding ways to communicate and relate with those around them and the world. The chapters are short and help build the story’s fast pace. It is beautifully written. The plot is well organized and the mystery surrounding Jacob keeps the story moving.

This is a great book about foster parenting, children, and how relationships both big and small can end up enriching our lives beyond our expectations. Sweet and Honest. It was a great read to warm my heart on a cold snowing evening.
