"The Agony of Alice" is the first published book of Naylor's ongoing Alice series. Alice is in the sixth grade at a new school, and just wants to fit in. More than that, however, she wants a mother-figure who will keep her from making so many embarrassing blunders. Alice's own mom died when she was 5, and she feels that her dad and older brother, while wonderful people, just don't know how to raise a girl.
This is a cute book which really captures the sentiments of a sixth grader. Alice is a likable character, though can get a bit annoying at times. Some of the other Alice books are better, but this one is a good start.
