This introduction to the fascinating differences in underwater life draws listeners (and readers) in with lilting verse augmented with engaging, bright illustrations. Fish not only come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, but they can do amazing things, like shine lights, crawl up onto land, and burrow into sand. Although most of the book is a quick read, with just a few phrases per page, interested children can learn more about the different types in the author's afterword, which offers enough information to spark even more research. For example: a clownfish protects itself from the poison on sea anemone tentacles while hiding among them. How? It has a protective slime on its skin.
FABULOUS FISHES is a marvelous meld of pure enjoyment and intriguing facts. It would be perfect in a preschool setting, up through a second grade classroom, as well as a great read-aloud for story time at home. Highly recommended.
