It’s Live!! Cover Reveal: Welcome to the Slipstream by Natalka Burian + Giveaway (US/Can)

Hi, YABCers!

Today we’re super excited to celebrate the cover reveal for WELCOME TO THE SLIPSTREAM by Natalka Burian, releasing June 18, 2017 from Merit Press/Simon & Schuster. Before we get to the cover, here’s a note from Natalka:

Hello all,

I’m Natalka Burian and I wrote a book about a girl named Van (as in Van Morrison. As in her dad was a big fan and Astral Weeks was his favorite album.) I knew “slipstream” – one of the lyrics in the song “Astral Weeks” – had to be part of the title. I loved the association the word Slipstream had with travel and movement, too.

Beyond that, I knew nothing else about titles or covers. Welcome to the Slipstream as a title came about after lots of tinkering, and frankly, I totally exhausted all of my cover-related creativity just putting that together. So, I’m deeply indebted to the talented Sylvia McArdle who, out of thin air, produced a cover more beautiful and perfect for this story than I could have dreamed. I literally gasped when I first saw it. So, thank you, Sylvia. And thank you, YABC readers, for taking a look into Van’s world.

About the Book

Seventeen-year-old Van moves to Las Vegas when her nomadic mother gets a consulting job at the Silver Saddle casino. Their residences tend to change as soon as either her mom finishes a job, or as soon as her erratic behavior gets them booted out, but in the meantime Van enjoys the comfort of room-service dining and the company of Alex, a college student assigned to look after her while on an internship at the casino. Just as she joins an all-girl rock band, falls for Alex, and starts at last to make friends and a home in Vegas, her mom is lured into a new agey, crystal-worshiping cult. On the night Van is to play her first gig with the band at Alex’s birthday party, a dramatic showdown in the Silver Saddle’s lobby sends Van chasing her mom to Sedona, racing to find her before a life-risking vision quest in the desert. Along the way, Van uncovers a family secret, and learns that home exists more in the people you love than in the places you stay.

With the misguided parental figures and escapades of Where’d You Go, Bernadette and Bryan Bliss’s No Parking at the End Times, WELCOME TO THE SLIPSTREAM explores family, friendship, and mental health against a bright, bizarre Vegas setting in this page-turning read.
