The Isles of the Gods

From enemy to lover’s, the romance aspect of this book was a fiery page-turning delight. Most of the book was action-packed and fast-paced making it hard to put down. Selly’s character was intriguing with her confidence in herself as a sailor juxtaposed with her shame in her undeveloped magic. I loved Prince Leander’s cockiness and even more, loved him as the events humbled him and allowed true self-growth to arise from someone already blessed beyond measure in magical power and status. This is a unique world that has been built on the beliefs and actions of many gods and the people that are protected by them. The beginning of the book had a steep learning curve as we were introduced to their faith, the god’s war, and the sacrifice of Leander’s ancestor, Anselm. It was a bit of a switch that the story was not about Anselm escaping his fate. The story unfolded from the perspective of Selly, Leander, Keegan, Jude, and Laskia allowing us to see into the minds of all the major players of the story. It was interesting seeing the role each played in the plot. One former enemy is now a loyal friend on the quest, one friend is now an enemy, and one player striving for power descends further into darkness when I kept expecting a redemption arc to unfold.
Final Verdict: Overall, the premise is great and the pace is perfect to keep you wondering whether Leander and his friends can succeed in what should be a routine ritual sacrifice to the Sentinel goddess that goes horribly wrong. The characters keep surprising me and the element of romance is enthralling without so much as a kiss yet. It ends on a cliffhanger and I am looking forward to the sequel.
