“I did my best to keep you from crossing paths with this world. And I shall do my best to protect you now that you have.” Jessamin has been an outcast since she moved from her island home of Melei to the dreary country of Albion. Everything changes when she meets Finn, a gorgeous, enigmatic young lord who introduces her to the secret world of Albion’s nobility, a world that has everything Jessamin doesn’t—power, money, status…and magic. But Finn has secrets of his own, dangerous secrets that the vicious Lord Downpike will do anything to possess. Unless Jessamin, armed only with her wits and her determination, can stop him.

I really didn't know what to expect with Illusions of Fate. I knew I wanted to give it a try because of the author, whose other series I adored. I'm happy to report that this book does not disappoint. White continues to entertain me with her humorous writing, although it's much more subtle in this book. She also does a great job at creating fun, likable characters. I really liked Jessamin and even though Finn wasn't all that great, he had a kind of charm and sweetness to him that made me like him nonetheless. The setting was pretty cool, too. I liked the historical aspect of it, mixed with magic and mystery. It's hard not to get into this book.

Jessamin is such a great character. She may be naive to the world around her, but she's strong, witty, and determined. She's basically thrown into this magical world, but she handles it very well and despite the odds being against her, she makes a point of standing up for herself and remaining as independent as possible. She's very strong-willed and capable and I just love it when I read about a character like that. Not to mention the girl is pretty hilarious. I loved the letters she wrote to her mom. Their written exchanges were pretty funny. She also has some funny dialogue with Finn, which I enjoyed. Finn took a bit to grow on me. He was kind of back and forth, hot and cold for a minute there, for good reason, but still. He is pretty charming and sweet though, and I really enjoyed their romance overall.

Despite the danger and mystery, things were pretty light-hearted. I really liked the villain. He was so devious and mysterious. There was definitely an aspect to him that I didn't predict at all, and I loved that. The pacing was fast, but in a good way. I breezed through this book and loved every minute of it. I would definitely recommend this to readers who are looking for a bit of magic and adventure with a good amount of romance and humor mixed in. White's writing is highly entertaining and I feel like it appeals to all readers alike.
