IF YOUR BABYSITTER IS A BRUJA is an adorable book that combines Halloween with the experience of having a babysitter. A young girl warns the reader that if it is nearing Halloween, and you have a new babysitter to beware that she might be a bruja! As the night continues, the young girl escapes from her black cats to play in the yard before getting dumped in a cauldron (bath). Eventually, she decides that her babysitter is her best friend, and they have the best time together.

What I loved: This is a great combination of Spanish and English woven seamlessly together. Older picture book readers who have experiences with babysitters will really enjoy this read and hope that they can have a bruja for a babysitter too! The story is quite imaginative, combining fantasy with the real events of the evening (such as the cauldron bath). The illustrations capture the story well with an air of whimsy throughout, as well as one flipped page for some extra interest.

The pages are mostly dark, but the font is written in white, which makes it easy to read throughout. The text also has a great rhythm to it that reads smoothly throughout the story. The book uses the style of speaking to the reader which will appeal to children who enjoy this type of writing.

What left me wanting more: As a small thing, a lot of the references may go over the heads of young readers, so caregivers will need to explain why the sudden changes in perspective. Sensitive readers may also be slightly frightened of the witch telling her black cats to attack or picking the girl up into the air by her pants.

Final verdict: Overall, IF YOUR BABYSITTER IS A BRUJA is a charming Halloween-themed picture book with plenty of witchy charm.
