Kids will gobble up this hilarious second adventure starring Frank and Bean, who prove that, win or lose, true friends can make any competition go down easy.

Frank likes peace and quiet. He likes his tea, his book, and his yoga mat. He is just settling in to enjoy them, when . . . honk! honk! honk! Here comes Bean with his new food truck! It is fun on wheels! It’s a rolling party! Bean is going to Food Truck Friday to sell his donuts. Bean’s donuts have zip. They have zing. They are sure to win the competition! Frank has something to sell, too. He has oatmeal. Oatmeal is boring. It needs zip. It needs zing. What if Bean’s donuts could help Frank’s oatmeal? What if donuts and oatmeal could work together, just like friends? Dry wit meets stylish, comical artwork as introspective Frank and gregarious Bean return in a tale for anyone who likes food, unlikely friendships, and laugh-out-loud funny adventures.

FRANK AND BEAN: FOOD TRUCK FIASCO is a delightful early chapter book. The story is told in 4 brief chapters with plenty of colorful illustrations. Bean has purchased a donut food truck to enter the competition at Food Truck Fridays. He is nervous about the competition, particularly Mad Dog, a famous chef. Frank goes to support Bean with an oatmeal truck. He likes very plain oatmeal, while Bean loves lots of toppings for his donuts. After a mishap, they create something new and special, learning that the secret to good food is sharing it with a friend.

What I loved: This is such a clever and fun early chapter book. The illustrations are fantastic, bringing both Frank and Bean to life in full color. The breadth and details feels like a picture book in terms of the way that they are portrayed and the many great things to catch young attentions on each and every page. The story includes many full page-spread images as well as smaller ones in places.

The story itself is also really engaging with two friends who seem so different but make their relationship work with support and encouragement. This type of friendship sets a great example for young readers who will appreciate the humor in their differences while they also manage to be there for each other. Ultimately, readers can also decide if they are for more zip and zing or plain foods for themselves as well - but also appreciate the way a happy medium can make for the best taste and friendships!

While it is a chapter book, the actual word count is fairly short, making it a great pick for children who are in between picture and chapter books - a very fun place to start. Short sentences help with early independent reading skills, and varying page lengths help to keep the pages turning quickly. This is a great story for early readers to sink their teeth into.

Final verdict: A charming early chapter book, FRANK AND BEAN: FOOD TRUCK FIASCO is a delightful pick for independent readers with colorful illustrations, a silly story, and a great pair of friends.
