FENWAY AND THE BONE THIEVES by Victoria J. Coe is the first in a brand-new chapter book series featuring Fenway from the popular series Hattie and Fenway. In this first installment, we meet Fenway and his humans. Fenway is heading to the treat store and hoping for a yummy treat instead of those nasty smelling drops. He's in luck when Hattie adds a bone to the cart. Once home, the treat is his. However, squirrels are conspiring in his backyard to steal his bone. So Fenway does what dogs do best: digs a hole and buries his treasure. Now the only problem is where did he put that bone!

What I Enjoyed:
This is a cute story. Told entirely from Fenway's perspective, the reader is immersed in Fenway's thoughts which gives a unique perspective to the world. Parents and children alike will find humor in Fenway's description of his owners: Food Lady and Fetch Man for starters. I adored the childlike quality and the playfulness that is evident in pups that is portrayed here. It comes across as realistic, bringing the character to life.

The writing itself is simplistic and age-appropriate which will be encouraging to young, independent readers. Chapters are well defined and shorter in length. Pictures are scattered throughout the book, depicting scenes that are currently taking place on the page, adding to rather than detracting from the story.

Final Thought: FENWAY AND THE BONE THIEVES is a clever, funny story about a dog and his daily life defending his humans and home that young readers will enjoy.
