I've read Jennifer O'Connell's chick lit books ('Off the Record' and 'Dress Rehearsal') and really enjoyed them so I knew I'd have to read 'Plan B' her latest book.

It was everything I expected and more. Vanessa and Reed, half brother and sister only 3 months apart, find out about each other. Reed is the son of a Hollywood celebrity and has gotten into trouble so his mother sends him away to live with his birth father's family. Vanessa is shook up about all this and has to get used to life with a famous star for a brother.

Any fan of O'Connell's writing or fans of teen chick lit will enjoy this book.

Vanessa has it all planned out. She's starting her senior year of high school, and after that "short, relatively painless year," she's going to go to Yale, where her boyfriend, Patrick, is already a freshman. It'll be great, just like before, only without parents around.

Then comes one phone call. Who would have thought one phone call, a fairly short one, could change Vanessa's life so drastically?

Apparently, Vanessa has an older half brother. Her parents were separated for awhile before she was born, and she has a brother that she just found out about. And he's coming to stay. Not just for a visit; he's going to be spending his senior year at Vanessa's school.

He's not completely unknown to her. In fact, the whole world knows Vanessa's brother. She sees his face every day. Her best friend has posters of Vanessa's brother on her wall. Reed Vaughn, Hollywood's favorite bad boy, is Vanessa's half brother.

That's a pretty big bombshell, and it changes things in ways Vanessa could never have imagined. When Reed comes to town, Vanessa's life, every aspect of it, is turned upside down. Things will never be the same for Vanessa again...But is change so bad?

Plan B, Jenny O'Connell's first young adult novel, is sure to be a hit. Published by MTV Books, it's full of believable characters, interesting plot twists, and great writing. This book had my attention all the way through! I've been very impressed with the novels MTV has published, and this one is no exception. The people at MTV have surprisingly good taste in books!

Vanessa is a great character to whom readers will certainly be able to relate. Her unwillingness for things to be different is very understandable, and so is her realization that change isn't always bad. This book is much less predictable than one might think, and the ending especially is surprise -- but not a bad surprise. Nothing about this book is bad! Pick it up and you won't be disappointed.

Vanessa Carlisle has the next year of her life planned. Coast through senior year. Graduated salutatorian. Spend the next summer in Europe with her best friend. Come back from Europe in time to make orientation at Yale, where she'll be joining her boyfriend, with whom she'll live happily ever after. The End. Except that it's not. Right before school starts, the Carlisle's get a shocking phone call. Vanessa's half-brother is going to come live with them for the year. Yes, brother. Who no one even knew existed. Well, they didn't know he was a relation. Everyone in America has heard of Reed Vaughn, Hollywood bad-boy who needs to get away from that scene or he'll end up in therapy forever. Oh, and Reed's a senior. Starting at Vanessa's school. Suddenly, Vanessa's plans are shattered. She's never been good with change, and now she's scrambling for a Plan B... one that will still end with happily ever after. Though the plot is a little far-fetched, the writing style and characters makes it seem absolutely realistic. The reader, who will probably be smarter than Vanessa, will also want her to find happily ever after, but maybe not the way she sees it.

Vanessa has it all figured; she's living the life after all. All she has to do is get through senior year (easy peasy), graduate, and then she gets to travel Europe and then join her boyfriend in a prestigious college (he's one year older).

However, all is not well when a phone call interrupts her life. Suddenly, Vanessa has a half brother who flips her life upside down. He's spending senior year in her school but that's not even the worst of it. Turns out, she knew her half brother all along. Well, sorta knew him . . . because he is the one and only Reed Vaughn, famous "Hollywood bad boy."

It's time to crack out Plan B.

Charming and delightful, this novel caught my attention and held it steadily. Vanessa comes across as a down to earth gal with teenage problems, just like the rest of us. This book is sure to knock your socks off ^_^.

This novel was a great story about how sometimes life doesn't have to be so controlled and planned out. Sometimes, the best things in life happen when we choose not to plan, or when things don't go our way. That is definitely what happens to Vanessa and though she struggles and freaks out about all the changes.. which is completely understandable. I don't think I could ever grasp the concept of a half brother but then again, I don't have such artistic parents or that kind of lifestyle to begin with. But still... it's a fun story about life of a senior in high school. And for those who still remember those days, or living it now... well we know how stressful they can be without so many other unexpected changes thrown our way. O'Connell proves to be a great writer who knows how to get at the things that teenagers worry about and reassures us throughout it.

Vanessa Carlisle--number 2 rank in her school, Yale prospie, unacknowledged control freak--knows exactly how she wants her senior year of high school to be like. She's going to breeze through it, get accepted into Yale and be with boyfriend Patrick, and take a summer trip through Europe with her gossip-crazy best friend Taylor.

However, her family gets extremely unexpected news: it turns out that Vanessa has a half-brother, and not just ANY half-brother. She shares 50% of her chromosomes with the national pretty-boy actor Reed Vaughn. And Reed is coming to stay with her family and attend her school in order to get away from Hollywood. Vanessa knows they won't get along. After all, what does she want with a bad boy drop-dead gorgeous guy who makes the girls swoon and has gone through rehab more times than she can count on one hand?

But initial impressions may be wrong. Vanessa struggles to deal with unexpected bumps in her senior year plan, including drifting apart from Patrick, finding competition with new smart girl Sarah Middleton, dealing with Taylor's PEOPLE magazine and famous people fetish, and meeting a new guy John. When will this I-hate-surprises girl learn that unexpected events in life can actually help her grow up?

PLAN B is a quick and cute read. The characters are rather flat and their circumstances are a little far-reaching, but it makes for great last-days-of-tanning reading material.
