Chanda's Secrets, an amazing novel by Allan Strattan, is set in southern Africa. The book opens with the main character, sixteen year old Chanda, making arrangements for her baby sister's funeral. Chanda lives in a world of mysterious illness and hushed whispers. Everyone is afraid to speak of the disease surrounding them - AIDS.

As she watches her mama struggle to support her family and her best friend falls into the dark world of prostitution, Chanda relies on her inner strength. When friends and family begin to fall ill, Chanda alone is fearless of the truth.

This is a beautifully written story offering a raw glimpse at the AIDS epidemic sweeping southern Africa. Stratton effectively puts faces to the many heartbreaking statistics.
