As the books cover says, Orson Scott Cards Seventh Son is a story about an America that might have been, but more importantly, it is about one remarkable boy. Thanks to the dying heroics of his oldest brother, Alvin Miller is born the seventh son of a seventh son, which gives him some remarkable powers that are beyond his understanding. In the first few years of his childhood in early America, Alvin miraculously survives numerous potential disasters. It soon becomes clear to Taleswapper, a traveling storyteller, that Alvins powers have attracted the attention of a dark power that desperately wants the boy dead.

Seventh Son is a great book for lovers of both historical and fantasy fiction. It is the first book of Cards Alvin Maker series, a story that will end with most readers rushing to the library to check out its sequel, Red Prophet.
