FORESHADOW is a fantastic collection of short stories with a focus on discussion and writing. Each story is undeniably well-composed and followed by an author's note, a discussion on the writing style by recognizable YA authors, and sometimes by a writing prompt to get the reader's own creativity sparked. The stories themselves are really incredible and worth reading even if you are not a writer - they span a range of topics but all of them are captivating and completely pull the reader in.
The added discussions and author's notes I found really intriguing, as someone who is not a writer, as they really add another level of thought and discourse around each story. It is almost like having a solo book club in some ways. But the stories! The first story, FLIGHT, is one I have been thinking about long after finishing. It is written with a shroud of mystery about a girl (only referred to as 'the girl') and her enigmatic mother, who always seems to be searching for something. Through the girl's eyes, we explore humanity, satisfaction, and freedom. It's a really stunning story, and I hope others are able to connect with it the way I did.
GLOW is another story that really sparked my imagination with the life-changing power that girls contain and the way that small things can seem earth shattering. It has a magical realism feel with the two young women depicted and their possible power to take the world apart, and the longing is felt throughout every word. It is definitely one that made me think of other scenarios, and I can imagine some interesting stories arising from these prompts.
FOOLS is another one that spoke to me with the premise of a cursed girl who seems to have fate decided for her but is still able to forge ahead with new decisions and the romance that grew so strongly in such a short story.
I could keep going, as they are all truly beautiful - this is such a great collection. The notes throughout and at the end seem that they would really help with people creating their own stories after reading, but even if you are not a writer, it is such a fantastic discussion that it has the feel of a book club with discussions built into it from truly impressive writers.
FORESHADOW is a great book to pick up whether you are a reader or a writer. This is a stunning collection of short stories that is beautifully curated.
