Court Duel is simply young adult fantasy at it's best. Meliara, a barefoot countess who most people call Mel, swears, along with her brother, on her father's deathbed to fight against the king's growing greed. With no help from the people at court and the evidense they have of broken laws ignored, she in her brother are prepared to fight, and indeed they do. Faced against an opposition, larger, sronger and better prepared, Mel and people from her surrounding villages hold off attack well for the moment but seem to have no way of holding their position. Yet when Mel gets stuck in a trap placed by her own side, the book shifts and a tale of cat and mouse ensues. This book, along with it's sequel Crown Duel are some of my favorite books. They have everything in them a teenage girl would want and Sherwood Smith captivates almost any reader.
