I seriously couldn't put this book down! The horror starts out slow and then strikes out when readers don't expect it. Think Pretty Little Liars with an edge meets Stephen King.
Casey has just gotten out of rehab for addiction to pain killers when her 'bad' news friend Shanna comes to pick her up to go to a rave. Only in this case there is something sinister going on. I loved the tension which starts right when Casey and her friends search for the next club only to find out that there's more going on then just partying. The images are subtle at first and the psychological terror builds to downright graphic horror when something picks off the friends one by one.
I really liked the character interaction too. Casey has a love-hate relationship with impulsive, self-destructive frenemy Shanna. While the friends are underground, painful truths surface. The friends that do search to escape, had a I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST NIGHT vibe going for it. Sam, Casey's ex interactions are sometimes awkward but there still is a hint of the chemistry that lets readers know that there is history between them.
The only thing I thought could have been fleshed out had to be the other friends in the story. I didn't really get a sense of Julie and Aya. Tom seemed more a side-kick. It would have been nice to have them more developed. But that's just my opinion.
Otherwise, this is a horror novel that delivers with fast-paced suspense where friends are racing to survive the terrors of being underground with some malevolent presence. Who will survive?
