Bloodspell is a bit of freshness in the vampire-dominated paranormal book world. It was refreshing to find a book where the vampire wasn’t the top of the food pyramid. The book focuses on witches and vampires as being age-old enemies so it had a bit of Twilight-meets-Romeo and Juliet feel to it. That being said, I enjoyed the book, especially in the second half where the pace and developments were exhilirating.
Victoria is a witch who has newly awakened into her powers. Along with her great powers, come (not great responsibility) an amulet and a familiar (well she had that since before but realized it later). She enrolls in a new school for her senior year where she meets Christian, an enigmatic and moody vampire and there begins their intense romance. Besides his thirst for her blood, they also have to deal with her lineage and the prophecy concerning her.
Adding to the obstacles against them are Lucian, Christian’s twin brother and Lord of House Deveraux who is on the search for the witch of the prophecy. Mix in a jealous ex and a Council where matters are still tense, they have a lot coming between them. Their relationship goes through a lot of ups and downs in one book, seeing as they are both dangerous to each other. Add to this a betrayal that comes from someone close to her and Victoria is barely hanging on to control of her powers.
As I said before, the pacing in the first half was a bit languid, and just when I thought the plot wasn’t going anywhere, things really picked up in the second half. Without giving much away, I would say that the climax was action filled and I loved every page of it.
