An excellent venture into the realm of gothic fantasy. There is a nice mix of old English boarding school drama with a mysterious alternative world excitement. Libba Brey brings her characters to life! No characature here. The protagonist react with real emotions and not always as the reader will expect. While the girls deal with growing up in the victorian age they must also deal with the mystery surrounding the main character. Excellent and suspenseful read!

This book was incredible. The plot was suspensful and scary, yet touching. The characters become nto only, gemma's friends, but your own as well, and The writing is...you want to quote it! I was sucked in when my friend recommended it to me, i couldn't put it down, adn at the end i didnt sleep, truly deeply a great read! I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good book, or even anyone who doesn't!

Some might say this is a slow book, but i think it is great. This a great addition to sci-fi books. It has everything a reader good want. I think this a great new additon to fantasy books, and really has me wanting more. Ok, i'll be honest the best part of this book is the drug use (opium), and the romance. It also great because it talks about a specific time period. And the indian talk was cool.

A great and terrible beauty was a good book
Really splendid, tons of twist and turns and the characters (most of them except Circe and ya know the bad guys) are pretty much likable.
Gemma Doyle's narration is witty and at times humorous. The book is well written and the ending will leave you wanting to read the sequel "Rebel Angels".

I think this book is a must read. It obsures the line between magic and reality. I thougt it was also wonderfully researched. I felt like I was in Victorian England. I felt the oppression and the need to fit in.

I was very sad when one of the friends died, but sometimes that has to happen to make a book great, and this one truly is. I whole-heartedly enoyed this absolutely though-provoking book.

This book was so not what i expected. I was looking for something new and different to read and i thought i'd try this. I really loved it because it was so different and un-cliche and it was a plot you've never heard of. I can't wait to read Rebel Angels!!!

This book was amazing. It had slow parts, but if you didnt pay attention to them it didnt add up to the end. I couldnt imagine what it was like to lose someone like Gemma lost her mom. Then to have some stranger tell you you have powers? Over all the book was great and i couldnt wait to start another.

This amazing novel by Libba Bray is the story of a girl living in England in the time of corsettes, ladies boarding schools, and new fashons. But behind it's extravagant exterior lies a world of high society and secret betrayls. Enter Gemma Doyle, who just moved in with her english grandmother after having spent her life in India. Guild-ridden by her mother's death and struggling to stay afloat at Spence acadamy, the last thing she needs it these strange visions she's been having. But could they be the key to her mother's death??

An amazing book that I highly recomend. Pick this one up today!
