This book is a great read! I've never liked historical fiction until now. Gemma Doyle is thrown into a stuck up school for young ladies where she clearly doesn't belong, and to add to her difference she learns of the magical rhelms, the powers she holds, and her mother's dark secret. The entire book was captivating, although the first few chapters of the book set in India was hard to get into.

My only negative to this book is that the main character befriends the evil stuck up girls.. it doesn't seem very true to life to me! But regardless of their initial cruel intentions, you learn to love them anyway!

A Great and Terrible Beauty had me rushing to the bookstore to pick up its sequal!

After the suspicious death of her mother in 1895, sixteen-year-old Gemma returns to England, after many years in India, to attend a finishing school where she becomes aware of her magical powers and ability to see into the spirit world.

I thought this book was a great read. Its about a girl named Gemma who goes to an a all girls school called Spence Academy in England. There she discovers more about her mothers death with the help of a mysterious friend named Kartik. Overall its a great story and i cant wait for this sequel to come out either. The sequel is called Rebel Angels and it comes out August 23rd. Enjoy

This book is incredibly engrossing but is not without its flaws. There are some great twists that you can't expect. Unfortunately the characters are somewhat annoying and unlikeable. Sometimes even the reader feels dislike toward the main character Gemma.

Even so I recommend this book simply because it's a book you can keep reading and it's entertaining.

At just sixteen years old, Gemma witnesses her mother's suicide in their home for years-India. By her father and brother she is sent to Spence, a boarding school in England. There she becomes friends with Felicity, Ann, and Pippa. There was a young Indian boy named Kartik that was present when her mother died who knows of her secret. He has followed her there to keep an eye on her and help her figure out what's happening. She learns out her mother's secret and finds she can go to the Realms, a place only members of the Order can go. Something is threatening the Realms and her world. With the help of Kartik, Gemma must found out what it is and fight it.

I absolutely love this book. I love books where the main character is a girl. It has a wonderful plot that keeps the pages turning. Of course, there is also Kartik.

A Great and Terrible Beauty wasn't one of those books that just went 'Gemma made friends and they found a scarey new realm, but they defeated it together and helped Gemma's mom, and lived happily ever after.' It went into depth. I felt the suspense, the magic in the book. I really liked how the author didn't make all the girls and Gemma's mother get along perfectly for most of the book. They had fights and disagreements throughout the whole book, just like real friends do. I thought it was good of the Celia Rees to let one of the characters die. It showed how dangerous and serious the realm was even without Circees .Overall this was a book worth reading and at points easy to relate to.

If there was an award for World's Best Female Book, this book would win, hands down. It has everything; an awesome female role model, a mysterious stranger (Kartik), new friends, suspense, romance, spoilers, surprises around every corner, and, most of all, magic!!!!!! I will never forget this book!

This book was so great that I have to type in caps. THIS BOOK WAS AWESOME!!!!!

After her mother's death (suicide), Gemma Doyle is whisked away from her home in India to a finishing school in England, 1895. There she finds friends (after a bit of trouble) and finds that she has magic powers and belongs to a group of powerful women called, the Order. Gemma and her friends dabble in the magics until they must fight the evil Circe. Read and find out what happens in the SUPERB story!

The book commences with the mysterious death/suicide of Gemma Doyle's mother. A death that tears Gemma's family apart and ends with Gemma going to an Academy for Young Ladies. But soon Gemma finds herself uncovering the mystery that led to her mother's death.

A mystery that leads Gemma and her friends to the Realm, a place of danger and of magic.

This is an excellent gothic fantasy, one so good it is amongst my absolute favourites. Filled with amazing detail that create the pretty atmostphere, this book is a must read!

This book didn't look or sound too good, but a friend of mine promised me I would love it. I listen to my friends alot, even if they told me I would not die if I jumped off a cliff I'd believe them. I got the book and I had never read a book with so much mystery, adventure, and surprises. with a new mystery popping up around every corner and giving an unbelievable solving to it. I think this might have been my favorite book, but i'm only 10.
