Review Detail
Grandmother, Have the Angels Come? by Denise Vega, is one of the most beautiful books Ive read in a long, long time. It is first and foremost a love story between a granddaughter and her grandmother, and yet it is so much more. This book captures the wide-eyed curiosity young children have for all things strange and newespecially when those things include the suttle changes that occur with the passage of time, like the whiteness of a grandmothers hair, the dimming of her vision, and the gentle curving of her aging back. With only a few words, Vega captures the essence of a childs unconditional love and uses it to transform the aging process so many of us dread into something both poetic and beautiful. Bravo!
Illustrator Erin Eitter Kono brings her own magic to this book. She offers rich and vibrant illustrations of grandmother and granddaughter discussing life and love against several swirling backdrops of sunshinse, clouds and candlelight.
Grandmother, Have the Angels Come? pulls the heartstrings in that indeciperable way that transforms a simple childrens book into an all-time classic. For me, it brought a quiet tear... and a smile of genuine gratitude.
This one isnt just a must for your granddaughters library&it truly is a must for your own.
