Kid Review: Show Your Colors by Smriti Prasadam-Halls

About This Book:

In a rhyming board book for the very young, each animal has a color to show off—but watch out for the surprise pop-up at the end!

From a duck with soft brown feathers to a donkey with strong white teeth, from a macaw with purple feathers to a fish with yellow fins, each animal on these cheery pages is happy to point out its special color. But what happens when Spider Jack pops up at the end to show off his long black legs? The rhythmic, singsong text combined with crisp, simple illustrations will have toddlers giggling along as they learn their colors.

great for young children learning body parts and colors

SHOW YOUR COLORS is a board book of animals and colors that works well for young toddlers. The book features an animal on each page who is invited to show a particular body part, such as hair, eyes, teeth, and more. The color of this body part is then described. At the end, there is a pop-up spider, who tells the reader to run away quick.

What I loved: This is a step above the typical color board book in that it combines the color with body part identification. The color described is only featured on that body part, so it will work best for children who are beginning to understand and label both bodies and colors. This makes it a great pick for young toddlers who will appreciate the board book format and advanced descriptive context. The backgrounds are very bright and colorful, as well as the images shown on them for some high contrast illustrations.

The text features alliteration in the animal names, such as Macaw Myrtle and Foxy Fred, as well as rhymes in the text that will be pleasant for young ears. The font is also large and easy to read for caregivers, which is always helpful, especially in low light settings such as night.

As a warning, for children who are sensitive, the spider pops out at the end with a bit of a spooky smile, and the text tells children to “run away quick and don’t come back.” Some readers will enjoy the silliness of this more than others.

Final verdict: SHOW YOUR COLORS is a board book that will work well for young children who are grasping colors and body parts with plenty of bright colors and great rhymes.
