A Spin on the Classic

This Cinderella retelling has a new spin on the classic. The story takes the classic elements and makes them opposites. The story is told from the viewpoint of the garden mouse, Fred, not Cinderella. Her fairy godmother is grouchy, not sweet. Cinderella is unimpressed with the prince and wants nothing to do with becoming his bride. She meets her future wife at the fair after winning the prize for her fairytale pumpkin. Instead of picturesque illustrations, it was all a bit sharp and garish which I think was part of the point expressing that Cinderella wants nothing to do with the original path laid out in the fairytale. This would be great to include in a study on retellings and to compare them. There is LBGTQ+ representation making this an inclusive modern adaption of the classic. However, that portion felt a bit rushed to make it a surprise ending.
