YABC Staff 2019 Favorites

This is it. A whole 'nother year has passed us by. A whole year of new beginnings, new books and other fun things! However you celebrate, we didn't want to end the year without sharing a couple of our favorite reads from the year. So, without further ado, here it is:

Staff Member, Lillian McCurry on her favorite read of the year: Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

I loved this YA sci-fi that comes off as a cross between Star Trek and The Breakfast Club. A fast paced, intergalactic adventure that is sure to please any sci-fi/fantasy fan.  Check out the details on the book here! [yabookscentral.com]

Staff Member, Samantha Rudolph on her favorite read of the year: A DREAM SO DARK by LL McKinney

This series is the most badass version of Alice in Wonderland I’ve ever read. It does everything a great fantasy sequel should: increases the stakes, dives deeper into the world, and leaves you begging for the next book! Check out the details on the book here! [yabookscentral.com]

Staff Member, Caitlin Haines on her favorite read of the yearThe Red Scrolls of Magic

Ahhh it’s so hard to pick just one! I think I’m going to have to go with The Red Scrolls of Magic by Cassandra Clare, though. Alec and Magnus have been my favorite characters for a decade, and when I found out they were getting their own trilogy, I literally cried. Both characters mean so much to me for a number of reasons, so I loved finally having a story focused on them. Check out the details on the book here! [yabookscentral.com]

Staff Member, Kim Baccellia on two of her favorite reads of the year: The Grace Year by Kim Liggett

I loved this Handmaid's Tale meets Lord of the Flies tale that is thought-provoking with it's idea of magic is tempered with the will to survive. Loved how the girls rally together and stand up against injustices.

The Moon Within by Aida Salazar: Love this MG diverse novel that is beautifully told showing a young girl and a ceremony that embraces her strong Mexica culture. Think Latinx ARE YOU THERE GOD, IT'S ME MARGARET.

Staff Member, Jazmen Greene on her favorite read of the year: Tristan Strong Punches A Hole in the Sky by Kwame Mbalia:

Tristan Stong is a solid and unique story, perfect for readers of any age. High action, great characters, just really good reading.
