Meet Kristy Boyce!

Kristy Boyce lives in Columbus, OH and teaches psychology as a senior lecturer at The Ohio State University. When she’s not spending time with her husband and son, she’s usually writing, reading, putting together fairy gardens, or watching happy reality TV (The Great British Bake-Off and So You Think You Can Dance are perennial favorites). Kristy is the social media coordinator for Central and Southern Ohio SCBWI. Her PitchWars manuscript, HOT BRITISH BOYFRIEND, won the 2019 YARWA Rosemary Award for excellence in contemporary YA.

Hot British Boyfriend is all about using travel to both escape your problems and build yourself up again. Obviously right now most of us can’t travel abroad due to the pandemic and travel restrictions…but that doesn’t mean we can’t dream of where we’ll go as soon as it’s safe!

With that said, I’ve put together my Top 5 places to visit in England (with some shout-outs to places visited in Hot British Boyfriend).

5. London: Afternoon tea at the Orangery at Kensington Gardens

You might not be able to have afternoon tea at the restaurant where Ellie and Will go in Hot British Boyfriend (because, ahem, I made it up), but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a wonderful afternoon of your own. My husband and I had afternoon tea here on our honeymoon and it was magical!

4. Bath: The Roman Baths

Okay, this might be the obvious choice when you visit the city, but some things are just required. And when you’re finished with the baths, you can visit all the sites famous for their connection to Jane Austen.

3. Cambridge: Go punting along the River Cam

Cambridge is known for its world-famous university, but you don’t need to be a student to enjoy this city. You can sign up for a private punting tour along the river or rent a boat and do it yourself. It’s not quite the same as the Venetian gondola rides that Ellie and Dev go on in Hot British Boyfriend, but it’s pretty close!

2. Northampton Flea market

I couldn’t write this list and leave off the Northampton flea market. This is where Ellie meets her “hot British boyfriend” in the book, and though I can’t promise any dating matches in real life this seems like a charming and off-beat way to spend an afternoon.

I mean, look at this place?! Are you surprised that this manor inspired the location for Ellie’s study abroad experience? If you ever get the chance, you have to visit.
