Hannah West’s debut, Kingdom of Ash and Briars, received a starred review from Kirkus Reviews and was named one of their Best Teen Books of 2016. She’s a freelance writer and vegetarian living in Texas with her husband and two rambunctious dogs.

Meet Realm Of Ruins!

Welcome to Nissera, land of three kingdoms and home to spectacular magic.

A century after her legendary ancestors overcame a bloodthirsty tyrant, seventeen-year-old Valory Braiosa attends a training academy for elicromancers, immortal beings with magical gifts. Yet Valory’s immense power seems impossible to tame, and she faces imprisonment by the Nisseran authorities. Then a forbidden resurrection spell awakens a long-dormant evil, and Valory may be the only one who can vanquish this terrifying villain. Together with a band of allies—including an old friend; a haughty princess; and a mysterious, handsome stranger—Valory must learn to harness her power and fight back.

Weaving together her imaginative world of magic with snippets from Beauty and the Beast and other classic stories, Hannah West’s gritty adventure is a thrilling, immersive companion to her acclaimed debut. Read this first and then discover the rest of Nissera or start with Kingdom of Ash and Briars—either way, you’ll love the journey.

~ Interview for Teen Read Week ~

YABC:  Did you prefer a specific genre as a teen? Or was any genre game?

I’ve always loved retellings and fractured fairy tales. It started with Ella Enchanted, which was my first read over 200 pages. After I devoured every Gail Carson Levine fantasy, I began reading and collecting Robin McKinley books. I enjoyed other speculative genres too, but the influences of these two authors is pretty apparent in REALM OF RUINS and especially KINGDOM OF ASH AND BRIARS.

YABC:  If you could spend an entire day with the character of your choice from any YA novel, who would it be and why?

Hermione Granger. I’d ask her to give me an incredibly thorough tour of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade (complete with butterbeer). Maybe she’d let me use her time turner so I could have time to work on all my WIPs and read every book on my TBR!

YABC:  What advice would you give teens who might want to be a writer?

Even if teachers and peers already consider you an excellent writer, don’t sit on your laurels. Sign up for a critique group, keep reading books you love, and maybe plan to take a writing course or two in college. Natural talent is so important, but continuously developing that talent is equally important. Those later high school/early college years are a time of so much growth, and if you work on your writing during this time, it will naturally mature as you do!
