Nine years ago, Fiona was just a kid. But everything changed the night the Pit Viper came to town. Sure, he rid the quiet, idyllic suburb of Hamm of its darkest problems. But Fiona witnessed something much, much worse from Hamm’s adults when they drove him away.

And now, the Pit Viper is back.

Fiona’s not just a kid anymore. She can handle the darkness she sees in the Pit Viper, a DJ whose wicked tattoos, quiet anger, and hypnotic music seem to speak to every teen in town…except her. She can handle watching as each of her friends seems to be overcome, nearly possessed by the music. She can even handle her unnerving suspicion that the DJ is hell-bent on revenge.

But she’s not sure she can handle falling in love with him.

~ Interview for Teen Read Week ~

YABC:  Did you prefer a specific genre as a teen? Or was any genre game?

At the end of the day, it was all about horror to me. I’m a lifelong ghost story addict and a worshipper of his nocturnal excellency Count Dracula. Any book that was dark, or weird, or full of blood was what got me going as a teen (and does to this day). If not horror, though, adventure, comedy, and romance did in a pinch. At the end of the day, if a book is excellently written, it doesn’t matter how many corpses it has in it (though one or two corpses never hurt a book).

YABC:  What book that you read as a teen had the most impact on you in your life?

This is a tough one! A book that comes to mind is Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore. Moore is as hilarious a writer as they come, and his mixture of biblical mythology, madcap horror, and brilliant wit showed me just how weird and funny I could be as a writer. Another great book that showed me just what I could do as a writer was My Date with Satan, a terrific short story collection by Stacey Richter. As for a YA book, check out Chris Crutcher’s Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, which, as a teen with weight issues and unusual friends, I really adored.

YABC:  What do you love most about the YA genre?

The fans, man. In so many other literary genres, people feel this need to justify loving a book, or to read what everyone else is reading. But YA fans just love books because they love them. Young readers especially really just want that book that makes them feel understood, and maybe a little less alone. For me, that’s what loving art is all about.

YABC:  Was there a class in high school that you wished you had paid closer attention to and why?

Music Theory! I’m a huge music lover, and always have ideas for songs, but writing music feels like so much Greek salad to me. I wish I’d worked harder and had learned to play bass or something.

YABC:  What advice would you give teens who might want to be a writer?

Write like you talk. Don’t listen to any teacher who tells you that you can’t use slang, or that you have to write like Shakespeare or Faulkner or whoever. All great writers write in their unique voice—write in yours.
