Meet Burning Bright!

Bryn is back for her senior year at the Institute for Excellence, also known as shape-shifting dragon school. She isn’t sure which is scarier, the life-force sucking dragons stalking campus or the fact that she’s officially betrothed to Jaxon, a guy who will never love her. Not that she could ever love him, either… That’s just ridiculous.

Senior year should be fun. Her parents are alive, she’s finally fitting in, and she’s learning how to be a Medic. But what’s with Jaxon giving her strange looks? He runs hot and cold, and he doesn’t even have the excuse of being a hybrid fire-and-ice-breathing dragon like her. One minute they’re having a great time and the next, she wants to blast a fireball at his head. The marriage contract of doom looms over them--unless this match not made in heaven kindles a flame…

~ Interview for Teen Read Week ~

YABC: What book or books were your go-to choice when you were a teen?

I loved Douglas Adams Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series. His sarcastic tone really resonated with me then ( because I was a smart ass) and now (because I’m still a smart ass). Here are a few of my favorite quotes.

“A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.”

“He felt that his whole life was some kind of dream and he sometimes wondered whose it was and whether they were enjoying it.”

YABC: Did you prefer a specific genre as a teen? Or was any genre game?

I loved fantasy and science fiction and anything that was an escape from normal, everyday high school life. Bonus points if there were dragons involved.

YABC: What do you love most about the YA genre?

As a teen you feel like you’re stuck on an unpleasant institutionalized merry go round where you wake up, go to school, come home, do homework, wake up and do it all over again. In YA, teens get to take on the bad guys and win, they make a difference in their fictional worlds. They have more power than teens do in real life and you can live vicariously through the characters.

YABC: Was there a class in high school that you wished you had paid closer attention to and why?

I wish I’d stressed less about grades. I focused on my grade point average and didn’t have a lot of fun. I was the bookworm who sat at home on Friday night and read books.  While there’s nothing wrong with that, I wish I would have been a little less introverted.

YABC: What advice would you give teens who might want to be a writer?

Read. Read. Read. And then read Stephen King’s On Writing. It’s one of the best writing craft books I’ve ever read.
