Teen Read Week 2017: Author Chat with Tristina Wright (27 Hours), Plus Giveaway!

27SM

Today we're excited to chat with Tristina Wright (27 Hours)

as part of YABC's Teen Read Week!

Read on for more about Tristina, her novel, plus a giveaway!

Meet Tristina Wright!

Tristina Wright is a blue-haired bisexual with anxiety and opinions. She’s also possibly a mermaid, but no one can get confirmation. She fell in love with science fiction and fantasy at a young age and frequently got caught writing in class instead of paying attention. She enjoys worlds with monsters and kissing and monsters kissing. She married a nerd who can build computers and make the sun shine with his smile. Most days, she can be found drinking coffee from her favorite chipped mug and making up more stories for her wombfruit, who keep life exciting and unpredictable.

Still trying to figure out the mermaid thing.

Meet 27 Hours!

Rumor Mora fears two things: hellhounds too strong for him to kill, and failure. Jude Welton has two dreams: for humans to stop killing monsters, and for his strange abilities to vanish.

But in no reality should a boy raised to love monsters fall for a boy raised to kill them.

Nyx Llorca keeps two secrets: the moon speaks to her, and she’s in love with Dahlia, her best friend. Braeden Tennant wants two things: to get out from his mother's shadow, and to unlearn Epsilon's darkest secret.

They’ll both have to commit treason to find the truth.

During one twenty-seven-hour night, if they can’t stop the war between the colonies and the monsters from becoming a war of extinction, the things they wish for will never come true, and the things they fear will be all that’s left.

27 Hours is a sweeping, thrilling story featuring a stellar cast of queer teenagers battling to save their homes and possibly every human on Sahara as the clock ticks down to zero.

~ Interview for Teen Read Week ~

YABC:  What book or books were your go-to choice when you were a teen?

Oh gosh, so many. I was a voracious bookworm, incredibly shy, and a bit of a loner with some undiagnosed pretty intense anxiety so putting my head in a book was a preferred method of escape. I also became an avid collector of series - the longer, the better. My absolute favorites? Probably The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. I loved the mysteries, the friendships, the family, and, let's be real, I had massive crushes on all three of them.

YABC:  What advice would you give teens who might want to be a writer?

Write for yourself. Yes, this is a job and a career, but just because it is those things doesn't mean that you have to automatically slog through it or lose your sense of joy for it. Hold onto that love for writing, that spark of wonder at creating something new, at molding a new world. Write for you first, because if you aren't happy with it, then I can guarantee no one else will be either.

YABC:  What do you love most about the YA genre?

The YA category itself is so great because it's such a transitional time in our lives. It's beyond kid, but not fully fleshed out adult yet. We have so many opinions and our brains are growing so fast to accommodate it all. We're growing into our own identities, political affiliations, possible first crushes, and dealing with expectations of "adultier adults." All the various genres of YA - be it contemporary, fantasy, science fiction, horror, mystery, etc. - deal with all of these weighty transitional doorways within their pages. They show readers what ifs and consequences. What the world could be. How the world is. What we can and should do better.

YABC:  Did you prefer a specific genre as a teen? Or was any genre game?

Oh, anything was fair game, but I definitely gravitated more toward science fiction and fantasy (shocking). I've always loved the wide open and malleable hope it brings to the table.

YABC:  What 3 YA books would you love to recommend to our readers?

RUNEBINDER by AR Kahler; THEY BOTH DIE AT THE END by Adam Silvera; A COURT OF FIVES by Kate Elliot
