Teen Read Week 2017: Author Chat with Mary Lindsey (Haven), Plus Giveaway!

Haven

Today we're excited to chat with Mary Lindsey (Haven)

as part of YABC's Teen Read Week!

Read on for more about Mary, her novel, plus a giveaway!

Meet Mary Lindsey!

Mary Lindsey is a multi award-winning, RITA® nominated author of romance for adults and teens. She lives on an island in the middle of a river. Seriously, she does. When not writing, she wrangles her rowdy pack of three teens, two Cairn Terriers, and one husband. Inexplicably, her favorite animal is the giant anteater and at one point, she had over 200 "pet" Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. The roaches are a long story involving three science-crazed kids and a soft spot for rescue animals. The good news is, the "pet" roaches found a home... somewhere else.

Meet Haven!

"We all hold a beast inside. The only difference is what form it takes when freed."

Rain Ryland has never belonged anywhere. He’s used to people judging him for his rough background, his intimidating size, and now, his orphan status. He’s always been on the outside, looking in, and he’s fine with that. Until he moves to New Wurzburg and meets Friederike Burkhart.

Freddie isn’t like normal teen girls, though. And someone wants her dead for it. Freddie warns he’d better stay far away if he wants to stay alive, but Rain’s never been good at running from trouble. For the first time, Rain has something worth fighting for, worth living for. Worth dying for.

~ Interview for Teen Read Week ~

YABC:  What current YA book would you recommend to your teenage self?

MOXIE by Jennifer Mathieu. It's set in a high school similar to the one I attended and would have been so empowering to my teen self. It's an important voice that illustrates everyone's voice, not matter how small, is important and can make a difference.

YABC:  If you could spend an entire day with the character of your choice from any YA novel, would would it be and why?

Albus Dumbledore! No explanation needed. Suffice it to say Albus is amazing. I can't even imagine how much I could learn spending time with him.

YABC:   What advice would you give teens who might want to be a writer?

If writing brings you joy or security, never ever give up no matter how hard or bleak it gets. It's important to accept and consider criticism, but at the same time, it is essential to remain true to your own vision for your work. To allow yourself freedom to explore things others tell you won't sell or isn't viable. Writing is for yourself at its core. That's what will keep you going: writing for yourself.

YABC:   What book from your younger years do you still recommend today?

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD by Harper Lee is one of my all-time favorite books that reaches into the heart of readers of any age as it explores human cruelty, loyalty, and love through the eyes of innocence. I loved it the first time I read it in middle school and found it even more compelling in high school and on every reading since.

YABC:  What 3 YA books would you love to recommend to our readers?

HOWL's MOVING CASTLE by Diana Wynne Jones, CODE NAME VERITY by Elizabeth Wein, and THE HATE U GIVE by Angie Thomas.
