Teen Read Week 2017: Author Chat with Lana Popovic (Wicked Like A Wildfire), Plus Giveaway!

WWSM

Today we're excited to chat with

Lana Popovic (Wicked Like A Wildfire)

as part of YABC's Teen Read Week!

Read on for more about Lana, her novel, plus a giveaway!

Meet Lana Popovic!

Lana's debut YA contemporary fantasy, Wicked Like a Wildfire, was published by Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins in August 2017. The duology sequel, Fierce Like a Firestorm, is forthcoming in Summer 2018.

Lana studied psychology and literature at Yale University, and law at Boston University. She is a graduate of the Emerson College Publishing and Writing program and works as a literary agent with Chalberg & Sussman, specializing in YA.

Lana lives in Boston, subsisting largely on cake, eyeliner, and aerial yoga. She'd happily spend all her waking hours hanging out in silks, and may very well be upside down right now. Just ask her about it (depending on your tolerance for high enthusiasm and hand-waving). Lana is represented by Taylor Haggerty at Waxman-Leavell.

Meet Wicked Like A Wildfire!

Fans of Holly Black and Leigh Bardugo will be bewitched by Lana Popovic's debut YA fantasy novel about a bargain that binds the fates—and hearts—of twin sisters to a force larger than life.

All the women in Iris and Malina’s family have the unique magical ability or “gleam” to manipulate beauty. Iris sees flowers as fractals and turns her kaleidoscope visions into glasswork, while Malina interprets moods as music. But their mother has strict rules to keep their gifts a secret, even in their secluded sea-side town. Iris and Malina are not allowed to share their magic with anyone, and above all, they are forbidden from falling in love.

But when their mother is mysteriously attacked, the sisters will have to unearth the truth behind the quiet lives their mother has built for them. They will discover a wicked curse that haunts their family line—but will they find that the very magic that bonds them together is destined to tear them apart forever?

Wicked Like a Wildfire is the first in a two-book series. Readers will be rapt with anticipation for the sequel.

~ Interview for Teen Read Week ~

YABC:  What book or books were your go-to choice when you were a teen?

I read a lot of Stephen King, Diana Gabaldon, and Sidney Sheldon as a teen. Also, I was a very intense fan of the Wheel of Timeseries, and desperately wanted to be an aes-sedai.

YABC:  Did you prefer a specific genre as a teen? Or was any genre game?

I've always had a preference for speculative fiction, but under that broad umbrella, I read avidly; fantasy of all kinds, hard and soft sci-fi, magical realism. As long as there was magic, aliens, or Cool Science happening, game on.

YABC:  What current YA book would you recommend to your teenage self?

Definitely An Enchantment of Ravens! A bold, clever female MC, an immensely powerful but vulnerable love interest, genuinely hilarious dialogue, gorgeous imagery--younger me would have been all about it!

YABC:  What 3 YA books would you love to recommend to our readers?

Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter, for its gorgeous, thorough weirdness; everything by Laini Taylor (cheating, I know, but I can't possibly pick one!) for purely astounding prose; and A Million Junes by Emily Henry for its heartbreaking, beautifully grounded magical realism.
