as part of YABC's Teen Read Week!

Read on for more about Kristen, her novel, plus a giveaway!

Meet Kristen Simmons!

Kristen Simmons is the author of the ARTICLE 5 series, THE GLASS ARROW, and METALTOWN. She has worked with survivors of abuse and trauma as a mental health therapist, taught Jazzercise in five states, and is forever in search of the next best cupcake. Currently she lives in Cincinnati, Ohio with her husband, where she spends her days supporting the caffeine industry and chasing her delightfully rambunctious son.

Meet Pacifica!

The critically acclaimed author of Article 5 and Metaltown brings her trademark action, romance, and frightening prescience to this tale of high seas adventure.

For too long our people have suffered, plagued by overcrowding, disease, and lack of work. We have only just survived for too long. Now we must take the next step and thrive.
Pacifica.
A new beginning.

Blue skies. Green grass. Clear ocean water. An island paradise like the ones that existed before the Melt.

A lucky five hundred lottery winners will be the first to go, the first to leave their polluted, dilapidated homes behind and start a new life. It sounds perfect. Like a dream.

The only problem? Marin Carey spent her childhood on those seas and knows there’s no island paradise out there. She’s corsario royalty, a pirate like her father and his father before him, and she knows a con when she sees one. So where are the First Five Hundred really going?

~ Interview for Teen Read Week ~

YABC:  If you could spend an entire day with the character of your choice from any YA novel, who would it be and why?

Inej from Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom, because 1. knives, 2. waffles, and 3. KAZ.

YABC:  What do you love most about the YA genre?

I love the sharpness of YA. So much of YA is about first time experiences - first fights, first kisses, first betrayals. Even in worlds that are falling to ruins, or battles in space, or in magic kingdoms, those elements always exist. I love the bite of those first times, both writing them and reading them. I love all the conflicting emotions.

YABC:  Was there a class in high school that you wished you had paid closer attention to and why?

Government! I had to re-learn how our country works as an adult and it sucks! I wish I'd just paid attention then instead of having to figure it all out after school!

YABC:  What advice would you give teens who might want to be a writer?

Read a lot, and keep writing. Write every day, even if it's only a little bit.

My favorite book that I read as a teen? Sadly, my teen years were filled with honors and AP coursework, so the only thing I think I read for pleasure was The Three Musketeers (which was wonderful so no regrets there). But, I still reread The Mediator series by Meg Cabot fairly often, so I would say those were my definite favorite.

My favorite from when I was a teen, this is hard! I didn't really have a favorite, but a lot of series that were favorites. I loved The Baby-Sitters Club even after I was too old to still love it probably haha, and Lurlene McDaniels's books would make me cry so hard, I loved them!
